A Norwegian team found first born children and those who had lost elder siblings and had hence become the eldest, scored higher on intelligence. The link, reported in Science, was found by looking at more than 250,000 male Norwegian conscripts. Experts have disagreed for decades about how birth order might influence intellect and achievement.

Supporters of the theory argue the eldest child gets more undivided attention from their parents from an early age.Others claim differences occur in the womb before birth because with each subsequent pregnancy the mother produces higher levels of antibodies that may attack the foetal brain.While others claim the relationship between birth order and intelligence is false, being biased by family size - historically, couples with lower IQs have tended to have more children than couples with higher IQs.

Although the phones are expected to cost as much as $600 when they go on sale at Apple and AT&T stores later this month, each company has received more than a million inquiries about the product's availability. A new twist in the advancement of Linux on the desktop: An oddball pact among Dell, Microsoft, and Novell is going to work to make Linux more viable on the desktop, according to Business week. Microsoft and Novell joined forces, sort of, late last year. And now, customers really seem to be signing up.
The whole affair is rather convoluted: Microsoft will license Windows alongside Novell's Linux platform, and Dell is buying both from Microsoft. The goal doesn't seem to be to move people off of Windows, really, but to get users of other Linux systems to move to the Novell system. Meanwhile, Microsoft has pledged not to sue Novell over patents, something CEO Steve Ballmer never shuts up about.
Rest assured this doesn't mean Microsoft is selling Linux for Dell to install on desktop PCs. That news, about Dell installing Ubuntu on select desktop models, is completely separate and unrelated to this pact. Rather, the Microsoft-Novell deal is all about server OSes which Dell will in turn install on servers it sells.
All of this is a long way of saying that Linux is really on the rise in both the server and desktop universe. But so far, Dell seems to be the only company really embracing the movement. Who will be next to jump into the open source pool?

U.S. cars play a disproportionate role in global warming because they are less fuel efficient than passenger vehicles used elsewhere in the world, emitting 15 per cent more carbon dioxide, and because they are driven further across wide open spaces.
Americans drive 202 million passenger vehicles out of 683 million worldwide. The average U.S. passenger vehicle, with a fuel economy of less than 32kpg, travels 17,700 km a year, nearly a third more than cars elsewhere, according to the s report, Global Warming on the Road. With suburban sprawl far outpacing the growth of public transport networks, Americans are commuting more each year, shopping more, and driving further to the shops each time.
The boom in sports utility vehicles (SUVs) has peaked as a result of soaring fuel prices, but overall U.S. fuel consumption will continue to rise in the next few years, the study found.
More SUVs are sold in the U.S. than any other type of car, overtaking small cars in 2002. The report predicted that they ``soon will be the main source of automotive CO2 emissions,'' emitting the equivalent of 55 large coal-fired power plants.

The Food and Drug Administration confiscated tubes of tainted Chinese-made toothpaste on Friday at a Dollar Plus store in Miami.Consumers were advised yesterday to discard all toothpaste made in China after federal health officials said they found Chinese-made toothpaste containing a poison used in some antifreeze in three locations: Miami, the Port of Los Angeles and Puerto Rico.

Although there are no reports of anyone being harmed by the toothpaste, the Food and Drug Administration warned that the Chinese products had a “low but meaningful risk of toxicity and injury” to children and people with kidney or liver disease.

The United States is the seventh country to find tainted Chinese toothpaste within its borders in recent weeks.

Measurements of children’s finger lengths appear to predict their scores on math and literacy tests, researchers have found.

The study might raise anew the controversial issue of whether boys and girls have different innate abilities, scientists said. This is because finger length is proposed to be related to differences in hormones responsible for developmental differences in boys and girls.In a study to appear in the British Journal of Psychology, researchers compared the finger lengths of 75 seven-year-old children with standardized test scores. They found what they called a clear link between math and literacy performance and the relative lengths of their index and ring fingers.

The researchers said the link is thought to stem from different levels of the hormones testosterone and oestrogen in the womb. Testosterone is believed to promote development of brain areas “often associated with spatial and mathematical skills,” while oestrogen may do the same for verbal ability, said study leader Mark Brosnan, head of the University of Bath, U.K. psychology department.

“Interestingly, these hormones are also thought have a say in the relative lengths of our index and ring fingers. We can use measurements of these fingers as a way of gauging the relative exposure to these two hormones in the womb.” Testosterone and oestrogen are also responsible for the development of male and female sexual characteristics, respectively.The researchers measured children’s fingers and divided the length of the index finger by that of the ring finger. The investigators found that a smaller ratio—that is, a longer ring finger with respect to index finger—was linked to better scores in math compared to literacy. This finger configuration also signals greater prenatal testosterone exposure, they said.

Scientists asked to comment on the finger-length study last week didn’t dispute that it might provide evidence bearing on the debate. But they urged caution in interpreting the findings. Some noted that finger-length is only an indirect indicator of prenatal hormone exposure. Finger ratio is just a “proxy” for hormone exposure, which can also be measured directly in the amniotic fluid where the fetus floats, noted Simon Baron-Cohen of Oxford University, U.K., who has extensively studied male-female brain differences

China plans to launch a lunar orbiter in the second half of 2007, in a first step towards a lunar probe, Xinhua news agency quoted the director of the National Space Administration as saying on Sunday.

If the Chang'e I orbiter succeeds in orbiting the moon, the next step would be an attempt to land. Ultimately a moon rover would collect samples before returning to earth, Sun Laiyan said in a speech at Beijing Jiaotong University.

The moon probe project is the third milestone in China's space technology after satellite and manned spacecraft projects, and a first step for us in exploring deep space.

Plans for a lunar orbiter launch in 2007 were included in China's white paper on its space program, unveiled last year.

The moon rover mission would be due in 2012, Xinhua said, citing unidentified earlier reports.

In 2003, China became only the third country -- after the United States and the former Soviet Union -- to launch a man into space aboard its own rocket. In October 2005, it sent two men into orbit and plans a space walk by 2008.

China will continue manned space missions, and would attempt the spacewalk and docking vessels in space, Sun said.

China's space capability aroused international concern in January when it destroyed one of its ageing satellites by launching a missile from Earth.

For those of you who use the Alt+Tab key combination to switch between open windows on your desktop, I am sure you have encountered times when you cannot distinguish one window from the other due to having more than one instance of the same program open.
Microsoft became aware of this draw-back after releasing the XP operating system and subsequently released a "Power Toy" to resolve this issue. The Power Toy resolves this issue by replacing the program icons with actual screenshots of your open windows. This way you can locate exactly which window you wish to switch to, which is immensely useful when navigating between several SAP windows at one time.
Here are pictures of using the Alt+Tab key combination both pre- and post- installation of the Power Toy:

As you can see in the first example above, it is impossible to differentiate between the IE instances and the SAP instances by looking at the icons. In the subsequent example, the screenshot clearly differentiates the windows.

Sociopathic thug? Socialist luminary? Or as existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre called him, "the most complete human being of our age"? Whatever you believe, there’s no denying that Ernesto "Che" Guevara has become the patron saint of revolutionaries. Undeniably, he is a man of mythical status - a reputation that persists less because of how he lived than because of how he died.
Unenthused by his efforts to incite revolution among the poor and oppressed in Bolivia, the nation’s army (trained and equipped by the U.S. military and the CIA) captured and executed Guevara in 1967. But before dumping his body in a secret grave, they gathered around for a strategic photo op. They wanted to prove to the world that Che was dead, in hopes that his political movement would die with him. in fact, anticipating charges that the photo had been faked, Che’s thoughtful captors amputated his hands and preserved them in formaldehyde.

But by killing the man, Bolivian officials unwittingly birthed his legend. The photo, which circulated around the world, bore a striking resemblance to Renaissance paintings of Christ taken down from the cross. Even as Che’s killers preened and gloated above him (the officer on the right seems to be inadvertently pointing to a wound on Guevara’s body near where Christ’s final wound was inflicted), Che’s eerily peaceful face was described as showing forgiveness. The photo’s allegorical significance certainly wasn’t lost on the revolutionary protesters of the era. They quickly adopted "Che lives!" as a slogan and rallying cry. Thanks to this photograph, "the passion of the Che" ensured that he would live on forever as a martyr for the socialist cause.

At their first meeting with journalists since taking over Russia’s largest independent radio news network, the managers had startling news of their own: from now on, they said, at least 50 percent of the reports about Russia must be “positive.”
In addition, opposition leaders could not be mentioned on the air and the United States was to be portrayed as an enemy, journalists employed by the network, Russian News Service, say they were told by the new managers, who are allies of the Kremlin.
How would they know what constituted positive news?
“When we talk of death, violence or poverty, for example, this is not positive,” said one editor at the station who did not want to be identified for fear of retribution. “If the stock market is up, that is positive. The weather can also be positive.”
In a darkening media landscape, radio news had been a rare bright spot. Now, the implementation of the “50 percent positive” rule at the Russian News Service leaves an increasingly small number of news outlets that are not managed by the Kremlin, directly or through the state national gas company, Gazprom, a major owner of media assets.
The three national television networks are already state controlled, though small-circulation newspapers generally remain independent.
This month alone, a bank loyal to President Vladimir V. Putin tightened its control of an independent television station, Parliament passed a measure banning “extremism” in politics and prosecutors have gone after individuals who post critical comments on Web chat rooms.
Parliament is also considering extending state control to Internet sites that report news, reflecting the growing importance of Web news as the country becomes more affluent and growing numbers of middle-class Russians acquire computers.
On Tuesday, the police raided the Educated Media Foundation, a nongovernmental group sponsored by United States and European donors that helps foster an independent news media. The police carried away documents and computers that were used as servers for the Web sites of similar groups. That brought down a Web site run by the Glasnost Defense Foundation, a media rights group, which published bulletins on violations of press freedoms.
“Russia is dropping off the list of countries that respect press freedoms,” said Boris Timoshenko, a spokesman for the foundation. “We have propaganda, not information.”
With this new campaign, seemingly aimed at tying up the loose ends before a parliamentary election in the fall that is being carefully stage-managed by the Kremlin, censorship rules in Russia have reached their most restrictive since the breakup of the Soviet Union, media watchdog groups say.
“This is not the U.S.S.R., when every print or broadcasting outlet was preliminarily censored,” Masha Lipman, a researcher at the Carnegie Moscow Center, said in a telephone interview.
Instead, the tactic has been to impose state ownership on media companies and replace editors with those who are supporters of Mr. Putin — or offer a generally more upbeat report on developments in Russia these days.
The new censorship rules are often passed in vaguely worded measures and decrees that are ostensibly intended to protect the public.
Late last year, for example, the prosecutor general and the interior minister appeared before Parliament to ask deputies to draft legislation banning the distribution on the Web of “extremist” content — a catch phrase, critics say, for information about opponents of Mr. Putin.
On Friday, the Federal Security Service, a successor agency to the K.G.B., questioned Garry Kasparov, the former chess champion and opposition politician, for four hours regarding an interview he had given on the Echo of Moscow radio station. Prosecutors have accused Mr. Kasparov of expressing extremist views.
Parliament on Wednesday passed a law allowing for prison sentences of as long as three years for “vandalism” motivated by politics or ideology. Once again, vandalism is interpreted broadly, human rights groups say, including acts of civil disobedience. In a test case, Moscow prosecutors are pursuing a criminal case against a political advocate accused of posting critical remarks about a member of Parliament on a Web site, the newspaper Kommersant reported Friday.
State television news, meanwhile, typically offers only bland fare of official meetings. Last weekend, the state channels mostly ignored the violent dispersal of opposition protests in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Rossiya TV, for example, led its newscast last Saturday with Mr. Putin attending a martial arts competition, with the Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme as his guest. On the streets of the capital that day, 54 people were beaten badly enough by the police that they sought medical care, Human Rights Watch said.

NASA reviews security following shooting

NASA is concentrating on a review of its security procedures as officials try to figure out how a contract worker smuggled a handgun into the Johnson Space Center, where he killed another employee and himself, a spokesman said Saturday.

The gunman, armed with a snub-nosed revolver, barricaded himself in a building that houses communications and tracking systems for the space shuttle. In addition to killing a man before taking his own life, he had duct-taped a woman to a chair, holding her for hours, police said. The woman hostage escaped, suffering minor injuries.

"Right now we're trying to understand why this happened, how this happened," Mike Coats, director of the Johnson Space Center, said in a news conference. He said NASA officials had reviewed their procedures earlier this week because of the Virginia Tech shootings.

"But of course we never believed this could happen here to our family and our situation."

On Saturday, space agency spokesman John Ira Petty said NASA was conducting what he called a continuous review of security procedures. Petty would not discuss specifics, saying the apparent murder-suicide was a police matter.

Houston police didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday.

To enter the space center, workers must show an ID badge as they drive past a security guard. The badge allows workers access to designated buildings.

NASA and police identified the gunman as 60-year-old William Phillips. He apparently had a dispute with the slain man, Police Chief Harold Hurtt said without elaborating.

NASA identified the slain man as David Beverly, a 62-year-old NASA worker. Beverly was shot in the chest, probably "in the early minutes of the whole ordeal," police said.

Beverly's wife, Linda, said her husband of 41 years was an electrical parts specialist who felt working at NASA was his calling.

"His intellect and his knowledge, David really felt he was contributor," she said.

Her husband had mentioned Phillips before, but she declined to say in what regard. Linda Beverly said it wouldn't be fair to Phillips.

The woman hostage, identified by NASA as Fran Crenshaw, a contract worker with MRI Technologies, worked in the same general area and was presumably taken hostage after Beverly was shot, Hurtt said.

"She was very courageous, a calming influence in this whole issue and apparently was a very positive relationship between her and the suspect because he at no time that we know of threatened to do injury to her," Hurtt said.

Phillips, an employee of Jacobs Engineering of Pasadena, Calif., had worked for NASA for 12 to 13 years and "up until recently, he has been a good employee," Coats said.

He was unmarried, had no children and apparently lived alone.

The shooter left telephone numbers and names of people to contact and wrote a note on a dry erase board in the room, police said.

"I don't recall what was on it," Hurtt said.

During the confrontation, NASA employees in the building were evacuated and others were ordered to remain in their offices for several hours. Roads within the 1,600-acre space center campus were also blocked off, and a nearby middle school kept its teachers and students inside as classes ended. Doors to Mission Control were locked as standard procedure.

President Bush was informed about the gunman as he flew back to Washington from an event in Michigan, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Microsoft Labs' Photosynth Creates 3D Environments From Your Vacation Photos

Reader Dennis turns us on to another really cool test product from Microsoft's labs called Photosynth. It's a bit of software that takes a huge collection of photos of a single place—say all the Flickr pictures tagged with that location name—and organizes them into a 3D landscape. What this gets you is the ability to pan, scroll and zoom across many pictures and get the feeling like you're actually there.

An example would be you coming home from vacation and wanting to see what's around the corner from the picture you took of some monument.

Hopefully the entire process doesn't require you to say "Enhance" 47 times. Dennis actually checked (what a nerd) and said Deckard only said it three times. Hit up the page and try it out yourself if you're running WinXP or Vista.

Tunnel Between Russia and Alaska in the Works

There's a project in the works to build the world's longest tunnel, a whopping 64 miles long, between Russia and Alaska. Not for the claustrophobic, the tunnel will take from 10-15 years to build at a cost of $10-12 billion. It's a Russian plan, and they'll be presenting their project to the U.S. next week for approval. The tunnel will be huge, containing a highway, railroad, and pipeline for transporting oil. To drive through the 64-mile-long tunnel you'll need to present officials at the entrance with a permit confirming the fact that you have huge balls.

So who's going home today on American Idol? Wait.. let me rephrase that question, who's NOT going home today? Sanjaya? Obviously there aren't enough Sanjaya haters, which is why he's still on the show.

Simon Cowel has been recently complementing Sanjaya Malakar's performaces. Last night Simon actually said that Sanjaya was "not horrible". Simon's probably just gave up on the show. Last night he told Haley Scarnato that clearly the show is no longer about how you sing it's about how you look–He was talking about her short shorts she was wearing. You gotta love this guy, he tells it like it is.

There have been theories about why Sanjaya is still on the show.. the dumbest one I've heard was that people from India were all voting for him. There is a thing called a time zone difference you dumb-asses. I think Howard Stern's "Vote for the worst" campaign has a lot to do with why Sanjaya is still in the show. Not everyone in America is an Idol fan or really cares about who the best singer is; so, just to screw up the show, the're voting for Sanjaya. I'm pretty sure he isn't getting eliminated tonight.

I also heard that the myspace girl doing the Sanjaya hunger strike gave up on it–guess she didn't wanna starve to death. I'm sure she was never starving herself in the first place–just a dumb chick trying to get some attention.

Boxer who killed man in bar fight to make pro debut

A former Golden Gloves champion who killed a man in a bar fight six years ago will make his professional boxing debut Friday night.

"I've worked hard to try and get my life back in order and boxing has served to focus my energy on something positive," said Jason Cook, 28, who was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to five years in a work-release program. He is currently on probation.

"I did a stupid thing and it's something I'll always have to live with," Cook told The Times of Munster.

Cook got into a fight with Stephen Lake, 26, outside a LaPorte bar on May 20, 2001, and "one good punch" snapped Lake's neck, said attorney Kim DeWitt, who prosecuted the case.

"(The fight) was something that I should have done a better job of walking away from," Cook said. "I tried several times to walk away from him, but it ended up happening. And the result was that someone died and I paid the price for my mistake."

Since then, Cook has spoken to school groups about the dangers of substance and alcohol abuse and attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He said the meetings, which were part of his sentencing conditions, have helped him get his life together.

Cook, 42-8 as an amateur, won the Chicago Golden Gloves heavyweight championship in 2003 and was runner-up as a light heavyweight last year.

His opponent in the One In A Million Inc. program Friday night at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville has not been announced.

"I feel like this is my time to turn professional," he said. "I've met all the aspects of my parole and now One In A Million is willing to take a chance on me. I'm grateful for the opportunity and I hope to make the most of my career."

Study: Teens limit personal profile info

Teens generally don't think twice about including their first names and photos on their personal online profiles, but most refrain from using full names or making their profiles fully public, a new survey finds.

The Pew Internet and American Life Project reported Wednesday that two-thirds of teens with profiles on blogs or social-networking sites have restricted access to their profiles in some fashion, such as by requiring passwords or making them available only to friends on an approved list.

The study comes amid growing concerns about online predators and other dangers on popular online hangouts like News Corp.'s MySpace and Facebook, which encourage their youth-oriented visitors to expand their circles of friends through messaging tools and personal profile pages.

Social-networking sites have responded by offering users more controls over how much they make public and warning them about revealing too much.

According to Pew, fewer than a third of teens with profiles use their last names, and a similar number include their e-mail addresses. Only 2% list their cellphone numbers.

But 79% have included photos of themselves, with girls more likely to do so. Eighty-two percent use their first names, and half identify their schools.

"Teens are manifesting the tension between wanting to keep themselves safe online and wanting to share themselves with their friends and potentially make new ones," said Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist at Pew. "Teens, particularly girls and younger teens, have gotten the message about protecting themselves on social networks, but the fun of these networks is the ability to share yourself with others on them."

Dashiell Feiler, a 16-year-old high school junior, said he keeps his profiles open, but uses at most his first name and last initial. He said people who find him tend to be friends anyway, but he left off his full name as a precaution.

"I just thought I didn't want anybody to figure out where I live," he said.

According to Pew, 45% of online teens do not have profiles at all, a figure that contradicts widespread perceptions that the nation's youths are continually on MySpace. Lenhart said younger teens, in particular, tend to stay away, some because they fail to meet a site's minimum age requirements.

Most of the teens with profiles say they use the sites to stay in touch with existing friends. Only half of teens with social-networking profiles say they use the sites to make new friends.

A third of teens online say they have been contacted by strangers, not necessarily through social-networking sites. Of those, 21% say they responded to learn more about that person, and 23% say they felt scared or uncomfortable by the encounter.

The telephone study of 935 American youths, ages 12 to 17, and their parents was conducted Oct. 23 to Nov. 19 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

China Official Blames Internet for Youth Crime

Most youth crime in China can be blamed on negative influences from violent or pornographic Web sites, a police spokesman said on Thursday, justifying the country's latest crackdown on the Internet.

"In recent years from the cases we have discovered, the proportion of young people guilty of cheating, rape or robbery who are given to using the Internet or have been corrupted by online filth, is very high," spokesman Wu Heping said.

"Our preliminary figures for arrested youth criminals is that almost 80 percent of them have been seduced by the Internet," he told a news conference.

"It makes people very pained to know that crimes are committed by people corrupted by obscene pictures and images," Wu said.

Last week China announced a new campaign against Internet pornography that would also take aim at fraud, illegal lotteries and "rumour-spreading" to protect the country's mainly young Internet users from "negative online influences", state media said.

"The public security system will uphold the law during this campaign and also take tips from the public to clean up the pure space of the Internet," Wu added.

Last November a Chinese court sentenced the founder of the country's largest pornography Web site to life imprisonment.

Pornography was among the vices almost wiped out in China under the strict, puritanical rule of Mao Zedong. But since economic reforms began and social controls were loosened, it has become more readily available.

China has an army of cyber police who patrol the Internet for unfavourable content, but their targets are more often politically sensitive subjects than pornography or online scams.

Living goddess, Kumari

As a country Nepal worships many gods, goddesses, deities and so on in the form of physical objects and symbols. But over an above that they also have a living goddess that takes the form of a prepubescent girl. The living Hindu goddess is known as Kumari Devi, which means virgin and she is thought to be an incarnation of the goddess Taleju until she comes of the age where she begins menstruation.

Throughout the country Hindus and Nepali Buddhists who are part of the Kumari cult, worship the Kumari Devi until she begins to menstruate or has a serious illness or loss of blood. From that point the goddess will leave her position and she will go back to common status. Since July 2001, Preeti Shakya has been the Royal Kumari, since her installation at the tender age of four years.

The next Royal Kumari must go through quite a process before she is selected to take on this interesting and unique role respected by so many in the country. First she must pass the thirty-two attributes of perfection, which is includes all of her physical features. After that the girls who pass must face a goddess, which can be terrifying to the young children between the ages of four to seven years. The child who remains calm is the one who can be seated on the pedestal to be worshipped as the Living Goddess”. The last test for the Kumari is to choose clothing and decorations that her predecessor wore before her.

Nepal has many Kumaris but the best recognized one is the Royal Kumari of Kathmandu. She takes up residence in the palace called Kumari Ghar, located in the center of the city at the Durbar Square and is worshipped at all religious holidays. Although it is the Kumari cult that makes her such an important part of their worship, it is the Mahayana Buddhists that established the worship of a virgin girl as the Royal Living Goddess. Contained in the Kumari Ghar are beautiful carvings and it is there that the Kumari must perform her daily rituals.

While the Kumari lives in the palace her and her caretaker’s expenses are provided by the trust fund that the government has.

For two hundred years, the White House has stood as a symbol of the Presidency, the United States government, and the American people. Its history, and the history of the nation’s capital, began when President George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790 declaring that the federal government would reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square…on the river Potomac." President Washington, together with city planner Pierre L’Enfant, chose the site for the new residence, which is now 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. As preparations began for the new federal city, a competition was held to find a builder of the "President’s House." Nine proposals were submitted, and Irish-born architect James Hoban won a gold medal for his practical and handsome design.

Construction began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792. Although President Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it. It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in. Since that time, each President has made his own changes and additions. The White House is, after all, the President’s private home. It is also the only private residence of a head of state that is open to the public, free of charge.

The White House has a unique and fascinating history. It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814 (during the war of 1812) and another fire in the West Wing in 1929, while Herbert Hoover was President. Throughout much of Harry S. Truman’s presidency, the interior of the house, with the exception of the third floor, was completely gutted and renovated while the Trumans lived at Blair House, right across Pennsylvania Avenue. Nonetheless, the exterior stone walls are those first put in place when the White House was constructed two centuries ago.

Presidents can express their individual style in how they decorate some parts of the house and in how they receive the public during their stay. Thomas Jefferson held the first Inaugural open house in 1805. Many of those who attended the swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol simply followed him home, where he greeted them in the Blue Room. President Jefferson also opened the house for public tours, and it has remained open, except during wartime, ever since. In addition, he welcomed visitors to annual receptions on New Year’s Day and on the Fourth of July. In 1829, a horde of 20,000 Inaugural callers forced President Andrew Jackson to flee to the safety of a hotel while, on the lawn, aides filled washtubs with orange juice and whiskey to lure the mob out of the mud-tracked White House.

After Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, Inaugural crowds became far too large for the White House to accommodate them comfortably. However, not until Grover Cleveland’s first presidency did this unsafe practice change. He held a presidential review of the troops from a flag-draped grandstand built in front of the White House. This procession evolved into the official Inaugural parade we know today. Receptions on New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July continued to be held until the early 1930s.

Nepali students at Virginia Tech shocked but safe

All of the Nepali students and a faculty member at Virginia Tech are safe, according to a Nepali faculty member of the university.According to Dr. Devi Ram Gnyawali, Associate Professor at the Department of Management at Virginia Tech, of the 20 Nepali students and several non-student working families in Blacksburg, no Nepali individual has been injured or killed.

In the worst carnage in modern US history, a gunman shot down 32 students of the university in Blacksburg before killing himself on Monday morning.

"I spent a lot of time yesterday (within hours of the two incidents) to be in touch with Nepalese (students, staff, and families). Based on my conversation and meetings with Nepalese here, it is my understanding that no Nepali individual has been injured or dead," Gnyawali told Nepalnews.

He said that all of them continue to be in a state of deep shock and sadness following the tragedy "It will take many days and weeks for us to recover. Sadly, some will never recover," he said.

Dr. Gnyawali, who is the only Nepali faculty at Virginia Tech, has been teaching there for the past 10 years. "It is a wonderful university and used to be a very peaceful one," he said.

Virginia Tech is the largest university in the State of Virginia with over 26,000 students.

"The situation here is beyond anyone's imagination. Families of students, faculty, and staff are frantically trying to meet their loved ones. It is my understanding that many of the victims' families have reached the campus of Virginia Tech and have been with the injured persons in the area hospitals," he said.

Dr. Gnyawali said that it will be hard for the university students and teachers to cope with the tragedy, "especially because many of us personally know the victims."

He said that he will be attending the condolence ceremony (scheduled for 2 pm Tuesday, Blacksburg time). US President George Bush and his wife as well as the Governor of Virginia (Mr. Tim Kaine and his wife) will also be attending the ceremony.

G.V. Loganathan ; victim of virginia tech

G.V. Loganathan, 51, was a professor of civil and environmental engineering specializing in hydraulic networks and water resources systems analysis and design.

He was born in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and attended Kanpur Indian Institute of Technology before moving to the United States in 1982 to study for his Ph.D. at Purdue University.

An Indian television station quoted his mother as saying "He was a very good student and always topped his class."

"It's a terrible shock," said the mother, who was not named. "He rang two days ago and said he planned to move back to India in the next couple of years."

Relatives told the Indian news station NDTV 24/7 that Mr. Loganathan was teaching a civil engineering class when the gunman came into the classroom and commenced shooting. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, one of whom is a student at Virginia Tech, according to the broadcast reports.

Indian publications said Mr. Loganathan had expressed the preference to be buried in Virginia if something happened rather than have his remains returned to India. His parents and other relatives were making plans to come to the United States to perform last rites.

The current president of ITT Kanpur, Sanjay Dhande, described Mr. Loganathan as a friend. Speaking on Indian television, he said he was "a very simple person, a very modest, a very family oriented person who was doing his duty, giving a lecture."

Well, I just got off the phone with my friend…we’ll call him Krish…and I really couldn’t roll all of his questions into just one. His girlfriend was starting to distance herself and he was really hurting. The more he talked, the more I felt like Kate Hudson in “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days”. I’m trying to be a great friend as I’m thinking to myself, “You did/said what?!”

I decided to document a short guide to things that I've heard several guys ask about or girls complain about recently. Although this is far from a handbook on how to understand women, it’s a quick 101 to a few top turn offs that well meaning guys seem to run into. Of course every girl is different, and some guys actually like love ferns.

Classic #1: Too much information.
Yes, girls like to talk. We like it when you talk to us. Communication is essential. However, don’t be surprised that you get the cold shoulder if you start spilling your guts too soon. On the first date, she really doesn’t want to know that you had a dream about the two of you getting married or that you are just dying to have kids who look just like her that won’t drop out of high school and end up in jail like you did. What do you really expect her to do with such complicated information when she has no reference to fit it in? You may scare her off if you talk about desire for commitment or your dark past too early in the relationship.

Classic #2: Too much attention.
Yes, girls like attention. We love little presents and notes and hugs that mean you’re thinking about us…in moderation. Girls can also be overwhelmed. Mark, who I was telling you about earlier, flew his girlfriend out to join him on vacation in Hawaii and then surprised her with a spa massage and jewelry. They had only been dating a few months but he really wanted to show her that he loved her and was shocked when she needed more “space” after this. I knew another girl whose boyfriend would call her three to five times a day almost everyday just to say "hi". Girls don’t want to have to feel guilty or indebted by you spoiling them or feel like they are being smothered by your well-meaning thoughtfulness. Give her a break, or else she’ll be asking you for time off pretty soon.

Classic #3: Too much or not enough.
Yes, in typical girl fashion I am going to give you the catch 22. If you move too fast, she’s gonna run. If you don’t move fast enough, she’s gonna quit. The truth is, you’ve got to be patient without being slow. If you overwhelm her and make her believe your relationship is all or nothing, she’s going to be confused and run. At the same time, every girl wants to be pursued. I got a call this week from a girl who was about to tell a guy who she had mutual interest in that nothing will happen between them. He had been her “friend” for over a year and although they both knew that they liked each other he wasn’t doing anything. It was torture for her and she felt like she had no choice but to move on. Every relationship needs time to develop. Don’t rush it, don’t stunt it. Both of you should feel like you are getting more comfortable over time.
